…Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all…
This is Philip Wilby's setting of Isaac Watts' famous hymn. The first two verses are in unison over a gentle rhythmic ostinato in the piano. Verse 3 goes into 4-part harmony and has a little more movement and a more developed piano part. Verse 4 returns to the opening tempo. The original melody is in the alto and bass and has counter-melodies in the soprano and tenor, after which the piece is brought to a quiet close by a solo soprano, the piano ostinato continuing underneath.
