… This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine…
A very upbeat setting of this traditional spiritual by Richard Phillips. A cheeky piano introduction leads to the first chorus where the men have the tune, later supported by upper voices providing semiquaver interjections where the gaps in the melody fall. Later on roles are reversed with the ladies singing the verse melody and men adding chords underneath. For the verse mentioning the days of the week, sopranos have the tune with each day declaimed by the other parts as it appears. The final chorus moves up a semitone and has a soprano descant to “ah”. Right at the end all voices shout the word “shine!”
