A slow melody for cor anglais and piano. It was originally a song setting of the John Donne poem, Sweetest love, I do not go, For weariness of thee, first published in the posthumous collection of love poetry, Songs and Sonnets in 1663. Without the words, a strophic setting needed more variety, so a contrasting middle section was added to make a more balanced composition.
