This is an extended slow and reflective piece for string orchestra. Lyrical and expressive, with a wide range of emotional power, What the Heart Knows is an extended song-form. The composer indulged in the traditional tonality of English composers in the Twentieth Century which, although much disapproved of by critics, retains its appeal and never really goes away. There is some white-note dissonance but the music largely uses the emotional range inherent in tonality. There are a few places in the piece where the solo violin should feature rather than all the firsts, therefore it has been presented in a separate part.
