A three movement suite for strings comprising March, Stories I could tell and Like Normal People March
The first movement is a slightly tongue-in-cheek march, It embraces several march cliches in a quirky way and possesses a certain charm.
Stories I could tell is a lyrical piece taking its atmosphere from the enigma implicit in its title. The composer wrote it as a form of sanctuary while his granddaughter, one-year old at the time, was visiting in Spain during the summer of 2015. The house was full of ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ and ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ and he was really surprised when this antidote to the anodyne was suddenly finished.
Like Normal People is the final movement harmonic language is tones down in comparison to the previous movements and employs a more open texture in places, using more contrapuntal writing and a pizzicato section to provide contrast.
