Lyrical and expressive, with a wide range of emotional power, What the Heart Knows is an extended song-form. Wiffin allowed himself to indulge in the traditional tonality of English composers in the Twentieth Century which, although much disapproved of by critics, retains its appeal and never really goes away. There is some 'white-note' dissonance but the music largely uses the emotional range inherent in tonality.
