Feu de Joie (Fire of Joy) is a musical depiction of the rifle salute of the same name – in this case sequences of notes fired into the air in rapid succession. This is quite an adventurous work, different from much of Wiffin's music but a development of a strand that can be traced from Gipsy Dance and Pagan Ritual. It goes further than either of those in terms of musical language but is not atonal though some sections have a high level of dissonance.
