Information

The text of this song comes from the final section of Paul's letter to the Ephesians in which he encourages them to "Put on all the armour which God provides, so that you may be able to stand firm against the devices of the devil". Canadian composer Leonard Ballantine has paraphrased this passage and given his song a firm vocal line which combines unison with strong block chords, but in a pop style with the piano's broken chords keeping the rhythm steady. The three choruses in Eb major are interspersed with a somewhat gentler dialogue between women and men which visits G minor and major before leading inexorably back to the home key, and the piece ends with a high, unison exclamation of the words "Be strong in the Lord" punctuated appropriately by a final sforzando, accented open fifth chord from the piano.
