It is relatively unusual to come across a setting of the Magnificat which is accompanied by piano, the majority of versions being either unaccompanied or for choir and organ. Eric Ball has used this opportunity to write a fairly demanding and very Romantic sounding piano part to accompany this famous text. The vocal lines contribute with some tricky passages of their own as well as some simple unaccompanied material. The main theme from the opening is reused in the Gloria.
