Written for Eb Sopranino Sax (opt. Eb Clarinet); 2 Bb Soprano Saxophones; 3 Eb Alto Saxophones; 3 Bb Tenor Saxophones; 2 Eb Baritone Saxophones; Bb Bass Saxophone (opt. C BC Tuba/Double Bass/Contrabassoon). Excursions is cast in a single movement of inter-linked component parts all in the time signature of 10/8, however, this metre is constantly broken up to reveal many different make-ups of the overall unit. From an audience perspective the overall effect is rather like a condensed train journey, where the view outside the window is constantly changing, though similar and familiar things do return from time to time to give a musical coherence to the piece.
