The Hemlock Stone is a large red sandstone rock about 30-feet long and found at Bramcote in Nottinghamshire. Legend says that the devil threw the red boulder in a fit of rage from Castleton, where he supposedly lived, all the way to Lenton Priory at Bramcote. There are also stories of the stone being used by druids as an altar for ancient sacrificial rites. However fanciful the tales of the stone, the site still remains a place of interest and atmosphere today.
The Devil and the Hemlock Stone is dedicated to and written for the clarinettist Linda Merrick and is written as one continuous movement. After a slow quiet start, the work gathers force and reaches a furious climax representing the devil’s anger. Then order is restored and the original mood of the Devil and the Hemlock Stone returns. The sound design is calculated to add a gothic atmosphere and to give the work a dark and threatening feel.
