A Brazilian style samba, Buds is an outstanding showcase for a jazz trumpet soloist. Brilliantly arranged by Alan Baylock, this composition by jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker opens up with the melody stated by 2nd trumpet, alto, tenor, 1st trombone and guitar. The ensemble develops the melody further leading into the solo section where the ensemble plays a smooth samba groove as background support to the 2nd trumpet soloist who builds the intensity. Auxiliary percussion featuring shaker and cowbell can really enhance this chart. The brass range takes lead trumpet up to written E-flat and lead bone to B-flat. A superb chart for an experienced band.
