Norman Bearcroft sets this spiritual using lots of unaccompanied singing as we go through the verses saying we’re going to sing, then shout, then pray when the Spirit tells us to, with the final verse an amalgamation of all three actions with busy vocal lines contributing to a thick choral texture. The final words “and obey the Spirit of the Lord” are set to soft unaccompanied vocal parts which spread out to a final G major chord to end the piece.
