For La Belle Héléne Jacques Offenbach was inspired by Greek mythology. The plot is based on the story of Helen of Troy, but was turned into a satire on French high society of the 19th century. The overture of La Belle Héléne was-and is-very popular. Offenbach combined within it a series of arias and choral passages from the operetta.
