…Here in the stable a baby lies dreaming, Here with the angels we worship and sing…
Mark Hoskins is a primary school teacher in Bristol. His carol ‘Here in the Stable’ is set to music by Philip Wilby, a composer and lecturer at Leeds University. A simple lilting piano accompaniment introduces the verses, sung first by the 1st sopranos and then by 1st & 2nd sopranos, which then continues into a unison chorus. The third verse is then presented in F major and after a loud, full chorus in two parts the music modulates back to D major for the last verse. This begins with a solo voice singing pp but builds gradually by adding more voices to a loud final chorus which ends in 3 parts with the words ‘here with the angels we worship and sing’.
