…Here in the stable a baby lies dreaming, Here with the angels we worship and sing…
Mark Hoskins is a primary school teacher in Bristol. His carol ‘Here in the Stable’ is set to music by Philip Wilby, a composer and lecturer at Leeds University. A simple lilting piano accompaniment introduces the verses, sung first by sopranos and then by sopranos and altos, which then lead to SATB choruses. The third verse is then taken by the lower voices in F major and after a loud, full chorus in this key the music modulates back to D major for the last verse. This begins with the sopranos singing pp and other voices humming, but builds gradually to a loud final chorus and the words ‘here with the angels we worship and sing’.
