Scott Joplin was born in Texas in 1868. He taught himself the piano and achieved fame in 1899 with the publication of "Maple Leaf Rag". "Elite Syncopations" is also from his early period, characterised by driving rhythms derived from repeated use of syncopation, hence the title.
