The original manuscript of this secular vocal piece is unique: it dates from around 1300. At the same time it is the oldest known canon, the oldest known six part composition, and the oldest known 'ground bass'. The piece illustrates the complexity and sophistication of medieval music but as so little was written we can only guess at how it sounded when realised. This instrumental version in four parts is a transcription, although the original stays in one key.
