This popular dance, originally written for piano in 1908, is the sixth movement from the Children's Corner Suite. Opera lovers may well spot Debussy's playful quotation of the opening of the Prelude to Wagner's opera 'Tristan and Isolde" (bars 47-48). Rhythm is an important consideration in much of Debussy's Piano music and this Cakewalk is no exception, with the syncopated melody sharing influences of ragtime. Light articulation and a touch of humour are the key to bringing this arrangement of the 'cheeky' dance to life.
