The moods of 'Moto Perpetuo' and 'Elegy' could not be of greater contrast, the first with its hyperactive and incessant energy, and the second with its still, intertwining melodic lines. What the pieces share however, is their evocation of timelessness; on the one hand the constancy of motion, and on the other the timeless quality of quiet reflection. An elegy is a lament for the dead. Fortunately, in this case it is not intended for any specific person, but instead reflects the nature of the music. The long melodic lines should display a sense of beauty as well as sadness, and while the overall indication is 'Lachrymose' (tearful), other (brighter) moods filter through.
