Maple Leaf Rag was one of a group of Rags, including "The Entertainer" and "Gladious Rag", which made Scott Joplin famous at the turn of the century. Ragtime grew alongside the popular "Cakewalk" and "The Two Step", and in its syncopation the seeds of jazz are apparent. It is in fact this syncopation which gives Ragtime its distinctive 'feel' and these rhythmic points should be carefully observed. There is certainly no need to play the piece fast; Ragtime can be played at a speed which is comfortable for the performers.
